Xiaopo(小坡) mainly refers to the area along the north bank of the Singapore River, specifically around today’s North Bridge Road. It was the second major Chinese settlement established after Singapore’s founding. Although it was primarily a Chinese enclave, Xiaopo(小坡) developed a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Here you’ll find prestigious educational institutions, numerous art venues, and vibrant places of worship including the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, Sri Krishnan Temple, Maghain Aboth Synagogue, as well as Catholic and Christian churches. Fort Canning Hill carries with it 700 years of Singapore’s rich history. Once the site of the royal palace of the ancient Kingdom of Singapura, it was known as the “Forbidden Hill” (translated from the Malay name Bukit Larangan). When Sir Stamford Raffles landed in Singapore, he built his residence on the hill and established Singapore’s first botanical garden there, experimenting with the cultivation of spice crops.
Over time, the hill became known as Government Hill, and later, Flagstaff Hill. During the Japanese invasion, it was at the Battlebox within Fort Canning that British General Percival made the fateful decision to surrender. After Singapore’s independence, Fort Canning gradually transformed from a military zone into a public park for leisure and recreation. Today, it stands as a green lung in the heart of the Garden City, drawing both local and international visitors.
